Many scriptwriters begin by writing stage plays, securing themselves an agent if they are lucky, then graduating on to write for the small and big screen. I’ve done the reverse. I started with screenplays, moved into TV and then on to radio drama. It’s only latterly I’ve come to write for the stage. When you record a radio play, the writer is far more involved in the production process than is the norm in film and TV, giving notes to the director and observing the actors play with and perform your material in the recording studio. It was being part of this process, witnessing a private performance of my work (albeit one that would later be broadcast to hundreds of thousands of listeners) that made me realise what I’d been missing out on. The sheer immediacy of seeing a group of actors interpret your text, bring action to your words, inhabit your characters and make them their own – in the playful environment of the rehearsal room and then in the crucible of the theatre itself.
Flutter
Flutter is my first stage play. It was initially performed as part of the Wandsworth Arts Fringe 2017 and received a grant from the Arts Council as well as sponsorship from the Racing Post newspaper. In June 2018 Flutter transferred to the Soho Theatre with the original cast. A sell out success, the play is both a love letter to the high street bookies and an exploration of the more urgent and destructive side of gambling.
Promoted in the Racing Post newspaper, Flutter attracted a new kind of audience to the theatre – punters pleased to see a work that reflected their world and concerns.
Below you can find a link to a short promotional video for Flutter, an interview about the play in Theatre Weekly, plus press reviews and photographs of the production.
