Script consultancy
One of the ways I tried to fund myself through film school was through betting on the horses. A far more sensible and successful method was through script reading. There’s no better way to learn the craft of screenwriting than by analyzing other people’s scripts.
From British Screen, to the Film Council and the BFI Film Fund, I’ve provided script analysis for hundreds of screenplays, treatments and novels and worked with a range of executives in both development and production funds. My strong analytical skills and ability to pinpoint the key areas in which screenplays can be improved are coupled with a broad knowledge of film markets and audience tastes. And my experience as both a writer and reader give me a clear insight into the development process and useful knowledge of what kind of notes work best for film-makers.
Some of the projects I’ve written reports for in the past include Atonement, The Constant Gardener, Creep, How I Live Now, and Byzantium.
I currently do reports for the Lighthouse-run Guiding Lights scheme.
“Justin is part of the reading team on Guiding Lights -- I find his assessments to be consistently insightful and constructive and always swift. I would work with him again in an instant.”

Teaching
In the same way that Jan and Rob helped me at the NFTS, I’ve tried to help students understand the fundamentals of screenwriting as a visiting tutor at the London Film Academy.
